Queer and Happy!

Description

It's amazing how many words get thrown around these days without any real understanding or consideration of their original meaning. I shall delve into that with more detail later though. Right now I'm just focusing on the slang terms used to describe homosexual men.

Queer=strange, odd
Faggot=a bundle of sticks or twigs set aside for burning, kindling
Fruit= part of a flowering plant by which the plant disseminates seeds
Fairy=a mythical being or creature from European folklore, a type of ethereal spirit
Gay=happy, joyful

Most all of these terms were at some point used as offensive slang terms for homosexual men, but when you look at the meaning of each word, one cannot help but think of how silly the notion is that they could ever be seen as insulting. The closest one to being insulting is "queer" and that's not all that insulting, for being different is never really a bad thing; especially when the norm is either boring, mean-spirited, or dumb. Faggot isn't much of an insult either. I suppose connections could be drawn to the Dark Ages and biblical times when homosexuals were killed out of bigoted ignorance, but that would still not be historically accurate since it was mostly witches and pagans who were burned. Homosexuals were more often either stoned to death, beaten to death, or just straight up killed. Likening someone to a fairy would be more of a compliment than an insult, since fairies in folklore are powerful immortal entities with control over various aspects of nature. Fairies were also not beings to be trifled with, for they were also considered extremely mischievous and dangerous if provoked. I've talked to a few people of fairly direct European descent who keep to the old ways and traditions who have warned me many times about not having any dealings with the Fay; as I have attempted to invoke such spirits during past rituals I have performed in my personal practices with witchcraft...and calling somebody a fruit just doesn't make any goddamn sense. I don't even see the connections between a homosexual male and a piece of fruit.

And of course, "gay" is the silliest excuse for an insult of all! How the hell does a word that means the same as happy, lighthearted, and jolly become an insult, and yet you have plenty of morons who careless toss the word around to describe something they don't like completely ignorant of its meaning. These people are strange to me. Why bother using the word if you aren't even going to use it properly? It's one of the reasons why when people call me gay I correct them and say, "I'm not gay I'm homosexual. If I was gay then I'd be happy...and I rarely ever am."

I was originally going to upload this piece to my other gallery as conceptual artwork for my series, but I decided to upload it here to justify this little lecture/rant. This piece features my gay clone, Douglas Slacks, from my original cast of characters. He is both my obsessive gay stalker in my series, and the cartoonish representation of my long-suppressed homosexuality. Read more about him here...theunisonreturns.deviantart.co…

I found a 2nd definition for "gay" once in my scholastic children's dictionary: "decorated with bright colors."
