Technology vs Human Stupidity

Albert Einstein once said, "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots." Even though there are those who would dispute this, I believe it is more than clear that the growing advancements of technology have left people more dumb than ever. It is quite ironic really. The potential for technology to educate and enhance daily activities is great, but this means little considering that mankind is a species with a keen knack for wasting potential. Here we have the ability to send vast amounts of information to nearly every corner of the globe in a matter of seconds, but instead of this being used to rely crucial news and keep the whole population up to date on current events most people tweet pictures of their fuckin' dinner and watch stupid cat videos all damn day! Humanity has gone from the extreme of being overly superstitious and ignorant to the other extreme of being completely jaded complacent zombies who are STILL painfully ignorant of what's going on in the world around them (this is especially true here in America).

It has gotten to the point where you can't go any place without seeing somebody fiddling with a damn i-phone or i-pad, talking into some earpiece, or distracting their senses with some other form of mind-numbing device. In my day (the irony is I can say that and still feel old at 26), phones just went "RING, RING" and were what you used to talk to someone over a long distance. Now they're basically miniature computers that snap pictures, play games, record videos, connect to the internet, and collect your personal data for the NSA. People think they use technology, but the reality is that we're being used by technology. A fair portion of the population would likely lose their minds if they didn't have a damn smartphone, some people would be completely lost without a fuckin' GPS in their cars, and give society about another generation of audiobooks and kindle and nearly half the population will have likely lost the ability to read on their own.

There are those people in society who have an annoying habit of trying to justify all this by claiming that it is merely the march of progress and change, but these same people are apparently ignorant of the fact that not all change is good change. Sometimes change can be both unnecessary and counterproductive, and considering how common it has become to see friends, lovers, and family members texting one another when they are all present in the same vicinity I'd say the growing advancements of technology has delivered a fatal blow to the art of communication and basic social etiquette. Don't even get me started on the high number of auto accidents caused by drivers who are too busy texting "OMG" and "LOL" to keep their eyes on the goddamn road. Heck, just the other day I actually saw a PSA video trying to get people to not text while driving! WHAT THE ACTUALLY FUCK?! Has our society really fallen that far that we need people to come on TV and tell us not to text while driving; something that plain common sense should tell us not to do. This kind of shit is exactly why I created this earlier piece... 

But of course the damage to social interaction and morality is just the tip of the iceberg I'm afraid, for the real threat of the so-called technological age lies in man's violent and war-mongering nature. There's a damn reason why the Second Amendment was added to our Constitution. Contrary to what many foolish people believe the Founding Fathers were not idiots. They knew damn well that technology would advance and more powerful and dangerous weapons would be created. The Second Amendment makes no stipulations about what manner of weapons the people may own saying only that we have the right to bear "arms". "Arms" is short for armaments which means quite simply weapons. We as free and independent people have the right to own and bear weapons to defend ourselves from those who would seek to rob us of our rights, but even I cannot deny that many weapons that have have been created are too dangerous for the common man to own. My stance with regards to this however is that if the weapons are too dangerous for the common people to have then they are too dangerous for the government to have as well, for what is the government but a collection of common people who live under the delusion of power and self-importance (which frankly makes them more dangerous than the other common folk). Predator drones, anti-aircraft guns, tanks, nuclear bombs; if these weapons are too dangerous for the common man to own and operate than no man nor group of men should have them...and yet they do; leaving life and liberty under constant threat, and the biggest threats of all remain our own power-mad governments. Of course the truth be told, even the damn atomic bomb has become an obsolete weapon for effective terrorism and warfare. These days a powerful EMP blast would be all it would take to topple any major developed country, for the loss of internet and all other manner of technological devices would lead to mass hysteria and havoc. Personally, I take comfort in knowing that even if such a catastrophe did occur I could still find solace in my collection of Garfield, Calvin & Hobbes, and Looney Tunes comic books. ^^
